Weende is the most northern and largest area of Göttingen. Not only is the university hospital situated here but also various other university and Max Planck institutes, including several which are currently being extended at great expense. The German Primate Centre (DPZ), Leibnitz Institute for Primate Research, was established here as an independent research centre offering services to German scientific work. The Protestant hospital Göttingen-Weende is also gaining importance beyond the local area. Companies which are known internationally are also based here.

University buildings and other developments changed the character of Weende in the past. However, the historic centre of the area around the renovated “Thiehaus” has for the most part been preserved. We recommend visiting our monastery park (Klosterpark) with its medieval wall, the remains of the monastery possessions, and its baroque offices

We must also mention that Weende has the town’s biggest open-air swimming-pool, whose existence has recently been under threat but which is likely to remain open thanks to the committed efforts of concerned local citizens.
